What is THCa?

THCa (tetrahydrocannabinolic acid) is the naturally occurring cannabinoid that has been identified as the precursor to Delta 9 THC. Studies show when THCa is heated it decarboxylates resulting in enjoyable euphoric effects. It differs from other psychoactive cannabinoids because there are no effects when THCa is eaten raw. The human body does not generate enough heat to decarboxylate THCa. Extreme heat must be used, such as a lighter.

Once decarboxylated, this cannabinoid bonds with the CB1 and CB2 receptors to produce psychoactive effects. Like Delta 9, THCa has been used as an antiemetic (anti-nausea), anxiolytic (anti-anxiety), orexigenic (appetite stimulant), analgesic (pain-relieving), and has neuroprotective properties.

What Does THCa Do?

Much Delta 9 THC, THCa is valued for its potential therapeutic properties, such as reducing nausea, alleviating anxiety, stimulating appetite, relieving pain, and offering neuroprotective support. Many consumers report that THCa produces intense psychoactive effects when the cannabinoid is smoked, vapes, or dabbed.

What is THCa Flower?

THCa (tetrahydrocannabinolic acid) flower refers to raw, unprocessed cannabis flower that contains THCa, the non-psychoactive precursor to THC (tetrahydrocannabinol). THCa is naturally present in live cannabis plants and converts into THC through a process called decarboxylation, which occurs when the flower is heated, such as during smoking or cooking.

Raw THCa flower does not produce the psychoactive effects typically associated with Delta 9 THC, making it a popular choice for those seeking the potential therapeutic benefits of cannabis without the high. Some users and researchers suggest that THCa may have anti-inflammatory, neuroprotective, and antiemetic properties.

How is THCa Flower Made?

There are no man made processes that create or manufacture THCa flower. It is the naturally occuring flower on the cannabis plant. Cultivators carefully nurture the THCa flower to preserve its chemical composition and optimize the terpene profile.

Once harvested, THCa flower must undergo a heating process known as decarboxylation to create a euphoric experience. The heat causes the chemical structure to change, releasing the acid from tetrahydrocannabinolic acid (THCa) and leaving behind Delta 9 tetrahydrocannabinol (THC).

What is THCa vs THC?

THCa (tetrahydrocannabinolic acid) and THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) are closely related. They differ in their molecular structure and effects on the body. Unlike THC, THCa contains an additional carboxyl ring. This molecular structure prevents THCa from binding to CB1 and CB2 receptors in the endocannabinoid system, which means that, in its raw form, THCa does not produce the psychoactive effects.

When THCa is decarboxylated through heat, such as smoking, vaping, or dabbing, the extra carboxyl ring is removed, converting THCa into Delta 9 THC. Once converted, it binds to the brain’s cannabinoid receptors, triggering euphoria.

What are Some THCa Benefits?

Due to the decarboxylation process, studies show that THCa offers many of the same benefits as Delta 9, like reducing nausea and inflammation, relieving pain, and increasing focus.

THCa flower enthusiasts also enjoy the variety of strains, each offering a unique experience tied to its terpene profile. For example, strains like Amnesia Haze, Jokerz Candy, Han Solo, and Mendo Breath are popular for their distinct mood states, such as relaxation and reduced anxiety.

Is THCa Legal?

The 2018 Farm Bill states that any cannabis flower with less than 0.3% Delta 9 by dry weight is considered legal hemp at the federal level. THCa does not contain more than 0.3% Delta 9, so products containing the cannabinoid can be sold, just like Delta 8, Delta 10, THCP, and many other THC varieties.

Recently, some states have restricted – or outright banned – THCa, so it is recommended to check local laws and regulations before purchasing THCa products online.

How Long Does THCa Stay in Your System?

Much like other forms of cannabis, the length of time that THCa stays in your system depends on a variety of factors. This includes frequency of use, method of consumption, personal physiology, and diet. THCa can be detected in different samples for the following periods:

  • Urine: Up to 30 days for heavy users. About a week for occasional users.

  • Blood: Up to 48 hours after use.

  • Saliva: Within 24 hours of use and up to 48 hours.
